Traffic jam ... gridlock ... morning rush hour ... afternoon rush hour … that's the reality for many commuters in the Polish capital, one of the most congested in Europe.

But the man-in-the gridlocked-street is usually unaware that he, and the vehicle he is riding in, comes under the influence of scientific concepts within the framework of Intelligent Transport Systems, from traffic lights to highly sophisticated use of technology to manage traffic flow, or issues of Sustainable Urban Mobility, including accessibility, safety and urban environment quality.
On the heels of a meeting in the Polish capital dedicated to 'intelligent transport' and as a new European project on urban mobility launches this week, Ela Krajewska spoke to Professor Wojciech Suchorzewski, internationally respected traffic systems expert with 60 years experience of observing our roads.
