The largest study on same-sex and transsexual relationships to date is now underway in Poland. Researchers from the Polish Academy of Sciences are to study the so-called 'families by choice' set up by LGBT couples, who are virtually invisible in state-level surveys. Meanwhile, the Campaign Against Homophobia organization puts the number of same-sex partners raising children at 50,000 in the country.

“I think the issue of children and being raised by lesbians or gays really does unearth the fundamental homophobia that Polish society still has,” says LGBT rights activist Greg Czarnecki.
