The summer's bird banding completed, along with inspection of stork nests, bringing a sad conclusion on what had started out as a good year for the white stork population in Poland.
In some places, the death rate among fledglings has been even as much as 80% - making this the worst year since the great flood in 1997. But thankfully the overall picture is not as bad. Elżbieta Krajewska is talking to Antoni Marczewski from the Society for the Protection of Birds (OTOP), and listening in to live recordings from webcams in storks' nests throughout Poland... as the birds prepare to head for Africa (traditionally the date is August 24, the Feast of St.Bartholomew).
