Ukraine, as well as what Poland and Europe’s response to the crisis should be, dominated Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski’s annual policy statement to parliament on Thursday.

As John Beauchamp reports, the policy statement coincided with the visit of NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen to Poland.

“Russia’s actions in Ukraine clearly violate the principle of peaceful coexistence among nations. The use of force under the pretense of protection of minority rights, which, and I underline, are not threatened in Ukraine, is legally unacceptable and politically dangerous,” Sikorski said.

However, not all attending the foreign minister’s annual address were pleased. Opposition Law and Justice member Witold Waszczykowski - and also a former deputy foreign minister - was quick to point out flaws in Sikorski’s policy.

“Rather than talk about concrete actions, we heard some dross statements and no mention of the worsening state Polish diplomacy over the past year,” he said.

Meanwhile, on his visit to Poland NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that “Poland can feel safe.” Rasmussen met with President Bronisław Komorowski, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as well as Foreign Minister Sikorski and Defence Minister Tomasz Siemoniak while in the Polish capital.
