A summit in Brussels, Wednesday, failed to reach an agreement on who will get two of the top jobs in the European Union: head of the European Council as well as foreign policy chief.

Negotiations are also continuing as to the make up of the next European Commission. The next meeting is now set for 30 August, John Beauchamp reports.

As for his political role, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said that his priority is domestic politics, and that not much is likely to change as to his candidacy for the post of European Council president before the August summit.

“I’ll say this openly and honestly that my priority is Poland and the position I hold in the country,” Donald Tusk said.

However, PM Tusk added that “If you want to ask me whether [my candidacy] is still possible, I’ll answer and say that during the negotiation process I would like to have every possible variant up my sleeve.”
