  • New EU sanctions on the cards for Russia? Danuta Isler speaks to Yevgen Vorobiov, a Ukrainian expert at the Warsaw-based Polish Institute of International Affairs about the possible scenarios.
EU ambassadors resumed talks on Friday on the the possibility of slapping new sanctions on Russia following the alleged shooting down by pro-Russian separatists of a Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 over eastern Ukraine last week.

The sanctions would see a ban on capital transfers between the EU and Russia, a suspension of trade in advanced technologies, arms, as well as restrictions in the energy sector.

It is possible that the list of people forbidden to enter the EU may also be widened as a result of the consultations.

Reporter Danuta Isler spoke to Yevgen Vorobiov, a Ukrainian expert at the Warsaw-based Polish Institute of International Affairs about possible scenarios.

"The EU is under a lot of public pressure to impose more sanctions. If no sanctions are imposed Russia will see it as a signal of political weakness and as a signal that even such an important red line as killing EU citizens may be crossed with impunity," he said.
