British twins Lisa and Louise Burns were still in primary school when Kubrick cast them to play the Grady sisters in his 1980 movie The Shining.

The siblings told Polish Radio's Nick Hodge that they were unaware that the film was a horror flick, and they remained blissfully ignorant of this, even after finishing the movie.

"We obviously hadn't heard of him because we were children,” Louise Burns said.

“If you met him you would have have just thought – a man with a beard and an American accent, which was quite rare in England in 1979.”

The twins concurred that the director was “lovely,” and recalled his eccentric dependence on potato salad with dollops of mayonnaise, which the film-maker mistakenly believed would help him slim.

A large section of the National Museum's Kubrick show is devoted to The Shining, taking in a ghoulish array of props and costumes, including the actual dresses that the Burns sisters wore in the movie.

The National Museum has arranged a series of lectures and other events for the exhibition's finale, with the show due to close on 14 September.
