The focal point of the museum's first gallery, which has just been unveiled to the public, is the forest.

It symbolizes Poland a 1000 years ago when the first Jews, fleeing persecution in Western Europe, arrived on Polish lands.

Legend has it that they heard birds chirping ‘Po-lin, Po-lin’, the Hebrew name for Poland which also means ‘rest here’.

Listen to thisreport in which Museum Director Dariusz Stola and Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett from New York University talk about the Polin legend, setting the scene for the grand opening of the core exhibition on 28 October.

Dariusz Stola says: ‘This is a museum of life. We tell the story of 1000 years of Jewish history in Poland and of course we have a very powerful gallery on the German occupation and the Holocaust in Poland but this is not our last gallery and not the only gallery.’
