Thirteen features compete for awards at the 39th Polish Film Festival which opens in Gdynia, northern Poland on Monday.
Festival Director Michal Oleszczyk tells our reporter Michal Kubicki that this is a competition "for a time of crisis".
“There are no films that are completely optimistic or care-free; most, even the comedies, have a pessimistic outlook on the world,” he says in this audio report.
Taking a broader look at present-day Polish cinema, Oleszczyk says that it’s in quite a good shape, adding that Paweł Pawlikowski’s ‘Ida’, which has proved an enormous popular success in many countries, stands a good chance to win an Academy Award in the best foreign language film category.
