Lukasz Palkowski's Gods, which takes a wry look at how a surgeon battled to perform Poland's first successful heart transplant, dominated the awards ceremony at the 39th Gdynia Film Festival.

Besides winning the coveted Golden Lions, the film garnered the Best Actor award for Tomasz Kot, who played irrepressible surgeon Zbigniew Religa, as well as three other gongs for Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction and Best Make Up.

“Polish films are always very sad, and people don't like that,” Palkowski told Polish Radio correspondent Nick Hodge after the awards ceremony.

“So I made a film with a light touch."

In this audio report, veteran director and chairman of the jury Ryszard Bugajski explains why the film struck the right chords.

Meanwhile, up and coming film-maker Krzysztof Skonieczny celebrates his movie Hardcore Disco's three awards (Best Debut, Best Cinematography, Best Debut Actress). Jasmina Polak, who won the latter, explains why working with the director was an adventure.

Finally, British film writer Michael Brooke reflects on Jan Komasa's Warsaw 44, an epic portrayal of the Warsaw Rising against the Nazi German occupiers. Komasa's movie won Best Actress (Zofia Wichlacz), Best Sound (Bartosz Putkiewicz) and Best Special Effects Vit Komrzy).
