Demographers predict that in four decades from now, the population of Poland will drop to 29 million from the current 37, with seven old-age pensioners per every ten professionally active citizens.

This is a very bleak vision, with a demographic crisis looming, where pensioners will outstrip tax payers.

Another important demographic trend is the shrinking of urban populations. Out of 39 cities with over 100 thousand inhabitants, only six registered a population growth over the past two decades.

Michal Kubicki has interviewed doctor Piotr Szukalski from the Institute of Sociology of the University of Lodz to find out why Polish citiies are shrinking.
