The new head of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has broken his silence over the so-called “Luxembourg Leaks”.

The leaks saw the recent press publication of over 300 tax rulings from the Luxembourg government to large multinational firms to help them minimise their corporate tax payments, John Beauchamp reports.

Juncker, who was elected to the head of the European Commission earlier this year, was prime minister of the small Benelux state at the time of the deals, and is now under fire for undermining EU tax regulations.

Speaking on Wednesday, Juncker underlined that is not just Luxembourg where such tax deals are brokered, saying that “these fiscal practices are common in 22 EU countries [...] Here we have a phenomenon which is present in practically the whole of Europe and beyond the European Union.”
