The Economy Ministry is gearing up to introduce quality norms for coal so as to cut low-class fossil fuel imports from abroad, a step that could harm Polish mines extracting low-quality coal as well, as Alicja Baczynska reports.

However, as Ewa Lutomska, from the Krakow Smog Alarm, warns, the ongoing discussion on the topic continues to evade the key factor of public health.

"Each year, ten times more people die because of poor air than the number of those who perish in road accidents," she says.

"We trust that Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz will comprehend the gravity of the problem and realize the dramatic situation millions of Poles have found themselves in and will look into the issue."
