In 1943 Olere was deported to Auschwitz where he worked in the Sonderkommando, a group of prisoners forced by the Germans to operate the crematoria and gas chambers.

The fact that he survived the ordeal is described by Paweł Sawicki, press spokesman for Auschwitz Museum, as a miracle.

In his art, he tells Michał Kubicki that ‘we can see the various stages of the extermination [of prisoners], as well as the atmosphere of the camp, with starvation, fear and despair.’
