According to the Lithuanian authorities, the move is aimed at deepening the country's integration with the European Union. All EU countries are required to eventually to join the eurozone, with the exception of Denmark and the United Kingdom, which negotiated special exemptions.
Also, some countries, such as Poland and Sweden, have so far avoided fulfilling the technical requirements of eurozone membership to keep the advantages of having their own national currency.
Błażej Prośniewski of Polish Radio's business desk spoke to Ingrida Šimonytė, Deputy Chairperson of the Board of the Central Bank of Lithuania to find out what lies behind Lithuania's eagerness to join the euro club.
