As John Beauchamp reports, with the announcement made by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday, it’s fingers crossed before the 87th Academy Awards gala on 22 February.

Ida Cinematographer Łukasz Żal did not hide his excitement at the nominations, saying that it was totally unexpected.

“I feel incredible, it still hasn’t had time to sink in because I certainly wasn’t expecting it,” Żal told journalists after the nomination announcement was made.

But for all the succeses of Ida over the past months, it did not win a Golden Globe Award and as film critic Łukasz Muszyński from the Polish wesite Filmweb says, a win for Ida is not necessarily in the bag.

“At the Golden Globes, Russia’s Leviathan won the Best Foreign Film, and in this instance the statistics go against Ida, because over the past five years, films which were awarded the Golden Globe in this category went onto win the Oscar.”

Additionally, two Polish films, Joanna and Our Curse, are in the running for Best Documentary Short Subject. The films, directed by Aneta Kopacz and Tomasz Śliwiński respectively, explore dilemmas faced by families after the diagnosis of a terminal illness.

Meanwhile, Anna Biedrzycka-Sheppard was nominated for Best Costume Design for her work on Maleficent.
