That, as Slawek Szefs reports, was the alarming conclusion of a Warsaw-hosted conference, held last week, devoted to initiatives for supporting and popularizing the idea of continuous education.

The area in which Poles have become masters in the trade is the range of excuses for inability to further their professional skills, says Beata Balinska from the Educational Research Institute.

"These range from simple reluctance and lack of time, through attitudes such as 'since I don't have to, I'm not taking up any challenges'... up to lack of funds for courses which are expensive... and unaware employers who see no need to invest in their workers,” she told Polish Radio.
