As Elżbieta Krajewska reports, Komorowski gave the speech after he decided not to participate in a televised debate among presidential candidates, and after the staff of his main opponent in the elections – Law and Justice’s Andrzej Duda – aired a TV spot spotlighting all his unkept election promises.

Komorowski underlined that he had assumed the office at a very difficult time, in the aftermath of the Smolensk air disaster in which then President Lech Kaczyński was killed.

“This was an unusual term as for three months before, I was simultaneously Speaker of Parliament and acting Head of State. I took over responsibility for Poland at a time of deep division and deep political crisis. The most important task then was to stabilise the country and its institutions. This meant nominating the head of the central bank and almost all the top military commanders,” Komorowski said.
