Poland has been struggling with the ageing of the population and dropping birth rates. On the other hand, many Polish women choose to give birth abroad. In Great Britain, for example, Polish women are having nearly twice as many children as they are back home.

Does the government do enough to encourage Polish women to become mothers? Is it hard to be a mother in Poland? Agnieszka Łaszczuk reports.

“There is a very strong stereotype of the Polish mother,” reflects Patrycja Dołowy of the Warsaw-based MaMa Foundation, which aims to provide legal and psychological assistance to mothers.

“The mother is someone who has to sacrifice herself for children […] She has to be responsible for everything, she has to be a superwoman, a super mother, super in her job, in every area almost, a super citizen too.”
