As many as 1000 politicians, businessmen and representatives of finacial think-tanks from around the continent are taking part.

The subject of this year’s edition of the event is “The European Union Integration in the Light of the European Security Crisis”, with primary focus on three areas: political, financial and energy. One of the inaugural sessions was devoted to the project of energy union.

Launched in February, the Energy Union is a flagship project of the new president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.

It envisages that the 28 member states of the European Union are to integrate their markets and increase security of supply under one policy set with investments of EUR 200 billion (USD 227 billion) per year expected over the next decade for its implementation.

"In the Polish situation it is much higher share of coal in the energy system so the transition part will be much longer. But the recipe for energy security is not necessarily coal in the EU. In the long run there are certainly other forms of energy more which can bring energy independence" Oliver Koch from the European Commission's Energy Directorate told reporter Błażej Prośniewski in Sopot.

Poland is the second-largest coal-mining country in Europe, after Germany, and the ninth-largest coal producer in the world.
