Conrad, born Józef Korzeniowski in 1857, endures as one of the most celebrated writers in the English language.

He came into the world in 1857 in the town of Berdyczów, then a part of the Russian Empire, currently Berdychiv in Ukraine.

Professor Zdzisław Najder, an eminent scholar and author of several studies on Conrad, attended the opening ceremony of the museum in Berdychiv documenting the writer’s life and work.

Talking to reporter Michał Kubicki, he describes Conrad as “the best-known man born in what is today’s Ukraine.

No family memorabilia has survived but the museum is a modern facility with lots of photos, films and multi-media presentations.

“You can press a button and watch Conrad cruising around the world on his ships,” the professor says.
