The number of refugees arriving from North Africa and the Middle East and their subsequent migration across Europe have triggered speculation on the manner in which this movement may be effectively monitored.

As Sławek Szefs reports, voices advocating a return to traditional border checks can be heard throughout the EU, including Schengen countries.
“If we want to further benefit from the possibilities of unrestricted travel throughout the EU then we need to jointly solve the problem of refugees,” says Patryk Kugiel from the Polish Institute of International Affairs.
“Otherwise, this process will proceed in a uncontrolled manner and could lead to the re-establishment of borders," argues the expert.
