The festival is one of its kind in Poland and one of the largest in the whole world. Its organizers – the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre and Theatrum Gedanense Foundation – each year present the greatest Shakespearean plays performed by theatres from around the world in renditions which are very often described as shocking and have little in common with the classic interpretation of the works of the bard.

“We concentrate on Shakespeare, although continental productions of Shakespeare very often turn away from the tradition and they do not pay too much respect to Shakespeare’s text, sometimes altering the original beyond recognition,” Professor Jerzy Limon, the director of the festival told Agnieszka Bielawska.
