Hate speech on the internet has reportedly found a new target in the Muslim community, while self-regulatory bodies have difficulty in applying sanctions against persistently offending media outlets. As Michał Owczarek reports, a new campaign has been launched in an attempt to stop hate speech in public discourse.

Called "Wybieram bez hejtu" (“Electing without hate”), the initiative was launched by intellectuals, artists, journalists and NGO activists to fight increasing verbal aggression in the media, particularly on the internet.

"We all should bear in mind that free speech is important yet it is not an absolute value, so we should respect other human beings and remember that words hurt, kill or exclude from society,” said Beata Chmiel of the Citizens of Culture Association, co-organising the campaign.
