The EC calls into question whether the gas pipeline will be able to solve Europe's problem of the diversification of energy sources.

As Michał Owczarek reports, last September, Russia’s Gazprom and major European energy companies from Western Europe signed an agreement to double Nord Stream's capacity by 2019.

Some 55 billion additional cubic meters of gas a year are expected to flow to Germany under the Baltic Sea, bypassing Poland and other Central & Eastern European countries. The agreement has raised serious concerns in the region.

"The Nord Stream deal stipulates for the exemption from the third-party access rule and thus has been heavily criticised as potentially violating EU regulations," said energy expert Tomasz Chmal.
