The tense, often life-threatening situation in eastern Ukraine has prompted increasing numbers of inhabitants of that region to flee westwards in the hope of finding shelter and conditions for a normal existence.

As Sławek Szefs reports, thousands of refugees have ventured as far as Poland, their immediate western neighbour. But are they finding what they have been hoping for?

In 2014, Polish authorities did not grant refugee status to even a single Ukrainian citizen, though relevant documents were submitted by over 2,000 applicants.
