Billions of dollars have been pledged by donor nations in aid for Syria at a conference organised in London, that brought together the leaders of 70 countries, including Polish PM Beata Szydło.

The London conference was the fourth such meeting of donors, co-organised by the UK, Germany, Kuwait, Norway and the United Nations, with the aim of raising the money needed to help the millions of people displaced and affected by five years of civil war.

As PM Beata Szydło said: “Poland joins the donor countries, assigning funds for humanitarian assistance to Syria, we want to help Syrians, contributing to a solution of this enormous problem that developed there, so Syrians can start thinking of a safe return home”.

The war in Syria has claimed the lives of at least 250, 000 people. Of the ten million displaced people, close to 5 million have gone abroad: to Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Europe.

“I am satisfied that those proposals which the Polish government has now put forward, to solve the problem outside the European Union, to strengthen the outside borders, bring humanitarian assistance and mostly, think how to solve conflicts where they arise - that such proposals are met with interest and understanding also in other European countries,” PM Szydło said in London.

Poland will be pitching in 3 million euro, in addition to 1.5 million earmarked earlier for aid projects by the Foreign Ministry.
