The theatre and music festival Gorzkie Żale (“Bitter Laments”) is held in Warsaw each year to reflect on the Passion of Christ as well as on some crucial existential questions.

It takes its name from a Catholic devotion, which originated in 18th century-Poland.

Agnieszka Łaszczuk reports on this year’s edition of the festival, which has just started in Warsaw.

“Even though the festival touches on difficult issues and poses ultimate questions, it does so in a variety of forms,” said Norbert Szczepański, Director for the Centre for Thought of John Paul II.

“All events will be accompanied by debates, discussions and meetings, since it is a space for dialogue,” the director added.

The festival Bitter Laments: New Epiphanies runs in Warsaw until 20 March.
