A court in the Belarusian capital of Minsk has sentenced twenty-one-year-old Nikita Likhavid for three and a half years in a maximum security prison for his participation in the protests after the 19 December presidential elections.

He is the third opposition figure to be sentenced to prison in Belarus this week and one of several activists and journalists recently charged by the Lukashenka regime.

Among them is Andrzej Poczobut, the local correspondent of Gazeta Wyborcza daily who was accused of insulting the president. Speaking for Polish Radio the leader of the Movement for Freedom, Aleksander Milinkiewicz said the purpose of such sentences is further intimidation of the society.
