The European Commission has given Poland until Monday to take action towards resolving the constitutional crisis.

A failure to act will prompt the EU to issue an opinion on the rule of law in Poland and hold the country to account.

As Michał Owczarek reports, an ongoing conflict over the Constitutional Tribunal began following the election of five new judges by the previous Civic Platform-controlled parliament.

After the Law and Justice party swept to power last October, disagreements have caused a constitutional deadlock.

“We need more time […] New legislation requires parliamentary work, so it seems Monday should be seen as an auxiliary date, not an ultimatum for sure,” said Polish deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymański.
