“We came close to the semi-finals. This hurts and it will hurt for a long time,” Poland's team captain, Robert Lewandowski said following the game, barely holding back the tears.

But manager Adam Nawałka told public broadcaster TVP Info: “I'm not sad. We're happy with what we have...

“Of course we're a little unsatisfied but we must look at what has been done and I think that we gave fans a lot of joy, football regained its place in the hearts of supporters and I think that's fantastic.”

Former coach Jerzy Engel added that Poland now has one of the best teams in Europe, one which has proved its fighting spirit: “We have players such as Lewandowski, Krychowiak, Błaszczykowski, Piszczek, Glik, Fabiański and many many others who make up the strength of the squad; and we're on a rising curve.”
