Four international battalions stationing in Poland and the Baltic states, further support for Ukraine and strengthening security in the south of Europe - these are the main decisions expected at the Alliance's Warsaw summit, opening officially on Friday.

They are to be a continuation of the strategy outlined at a NATO summit in Newport, Wales, two years ago in reaction to the Russian annexation of Crimea and the ensuing security threat triggered by the outbreak of a Kremlin-orchestrated military conflict in Eastern Ukraine.

Sławek Szefs looks at Poland's NATO record from Newport to the present summit in Warsaw.

Speaking in Brussels at a pre-summit meeting, the Secretary General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, praised Poland as one of the few members that fully met their obligation of assigning agreed funds for building up the potential of their national armed forces.

“The US spent over 3 percent of their GDP on defence, with the UK, Estonia and Poland being examples of European allies which spent more than 2 percent on defence,” the NATO chief observed.
