On Friday night, a faction of the Turkish military tried to force President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from office in a failed coup.

Despite several news broadcasters being forced off air, Erdogan managed to publicly urge Turks to stand up to the coup. Some experts even speculate that the coup attempt was organized by Erdogan himself to bolster his position.

Joanna Pietrzak, an expert on Turkey living in Istanbul, said: “Something very important and tragic happened, and it seems like life in Turkey goes on as usual. 15 July was announced a national holiday, a day of democracy… there’s an atmosphere of celebration.”
