  • Visegrad Group urges ‘reflection’ in EU after Brexit
At a meeting in Warsaw on Thursday, leaders of the Visegrad Group countries agreed to adopt a common position on the future of the European Union before a summit of the bloc in Bratislava in September.

“We need deeper reflection on the contemporary challenges facing the union,” in the wake of “the outcome of the referendum in the United Kingdom,” they said in a joint statement.

At the joint press conference of the Visegrad Group leaders, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło said that British voters’ recent decision to leave the EU was a "warning signal" and that the EU in its current institutional form “did not meet the expectations of Europeans”.

“It should be a union which is focused on the four freedoms of the single market (…) a union which is a competitive, global player, not divided into small entities and clubs,” she said.

Experts argue, however, that potential changes to EU treaties could bring negative effects for the V4 countries - the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.
