  • Capital remembers the Warsaw Uprising
The Warsaw Uprising erupted on 1 August, 1944. Seventy-two years later, the Polish capital still remembers.

The revolt of 1944 against the Nazis ended in the annihilation of Warsaw. Among the many events planned for the anniversary by the Warsaw Rising Museum is – as usual – the meeting in Piłsudski Square to sing the songs of the uprising, attended by thousands, a special programme dedicated to the youngest participants in the revolt, and a march commemorating the civilian victims, starting at the Monument to the “slaughter of Wola” when Germans responded to the Rising murdering between 30,000 and 65,000 residents of this district.

As the Museum’s Karol Mazur says, this is particularly poignant, as only 6,000 names of people who perished at the time are known.

As Elżbieta Krajewska reports, another highlight is the launching of a new album authored by Smolik for the Museum, in collaboration with Natalia Grosiak and Miuosh, and based on true histories from the Rising – mostly of women.

“Natalia of course chose women as the subjects of her lyrics. If we think about war, mostly we think about men, about soldiers. But what about women? They were serious heroes of those times,” Smolik says.
