Brussels has urged the country to respect rulings by its constitutional court and giving Warsaw three months to comply.
The Polish foreign ministry said in a statement that the commission’s move was “very premature”.
Senator Jan Maria Jackowski told Polish Radio that “it is a move which is not supported by the law, which makes it hard to treat it with all the seriousness associated with this institution [EC].”
The commission’s recommendations mark the second stage of a so-called rule of law procedure, initiated against Poland in January.
