He was knocked unconscious on Saturday in the town of Harlow and died of his injuries on Monday.

Local police said the attack on Jóźwik and a second Polish man who survived the assault was apparently unprovoked and that one line of inquiry was into whether the attack was a hate crime.

Some residents have said the assault was not the first instance of physical violence against Polish people in Harlow following the Brexit vote.

“We feel unwanted. It really escalated following the Brexit vote, there is more aggression, tension, racism... abuse at work,” one Pole living in Harlow told Polish Radio.
