The project was an initiative within the civic participatory budgeting programme.

Local authorities chipped in, as the mayor of Koszalin, Piotr Jedliński, says to “turn a simple observatory housed in a container into one which will be all-year, with an audio-visual hall and a better telescope.”

“One can really gaze at the stars, realise passions, but above all – learn what is up there in our sky.”

Koszalin already had an observatory, located on the roof of the boarding house for the local vocational college, but for some years now it was out of operation.

In 2014, local dentist and astronomy fan Paweł Iwanek suggested a new one on the list of participatory budget proposals – and won the vote. And now it's out there.
