The planned collision has put an end to the probe's research mission in space, during which the probe has gathered a lot of information about its destination, the 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet.

As Tomasz Ferenc reports, the probe's lander was equipped with some Polish-made instruments.

Professor Jerzy Grygorczuk, of the Space Research Centre at the Polish Academy of Sciences, who was involved in constructing one of the devices on board of the Philae lander said: "The Rosetta mission is not the first mission to a comet, but it has very special features. It's the first mission to a comet which is supplied with a lander."
