Centuries-old Polish burial sites in Moldova are crumbling to the ground but there is hope of saving them because of the rising interest in Poland among the local population.

Sławek Szefs reports that saving traces of Polish history is only one aspect of this country’s ties with Moldova, as interest in present-day relations is also quite high.

Artur Michalski, Poland's ambassador to Chisinau, says the only problem with this rise in popularity of things Polish is a lack of sufficiently qualified teachers, including at Moldovan academic centres.

From the umpteen students leaving annually to study in Poland, only a small handful return to their homeland.

However, regardless of the course of events, both situations have their positive aspects.

“From the point of Polish interests, it doesn't matter whether such a person stays in Poland or returns to Moldova and becomes an excellent ambassador of Polish culture here,” ambassador Michalski told Polish Radio.
