According to the paper, in one city in southern Poland in December, the air was more polluted than in Beijing.

What’s more, 33 out of the 50 most polluted cities in Europe are in Poland, the paper added.

Piotr Siergiej, from a grass-roots movement called Polish Smog Alert, which aims to educate Poles about the dangers of smog, said: "We are aware that Poland is the most polluted country in the European Union."

He added: "If we look at the list of the most polluted cities, the surprising fact is that these are rather small cities, like Opoczno, Żyrardów, or Piotrków Trybunalski."
