The end of February marks the last day of voting for the European Tree of the Year, a contest which originated in 2011, inspired by the popular Tree of the year competition.

The Polish candidate in this year's event is 650-year-old oak Józef, which grows in the Podkarpackie region of south-east Poland in the area of the residence of the Mycielski family, founded in the 17th century.

“Old trees are very important not only in ecology but in our history and culture,” said Jacek Bożek from the Gaja Klub, which deals with environmental issues and animal rights protection.
