The Golden Owls are awarded to Poles who are distinguished not only for their talent or achievements but also for their ability to work with Polish communities abroad to uphold the good image of Poland and Polish migrants.

In previous editions, the Golden Owls have been awarded to such world-famous Poles as illustrator and painter Rafał Olbiński and film director Agnieszka Holland, among others.

The award is handed out annually in Vienna late March.

This year, Małgorzata Bonikowska, a Polish community journalist from Canada, received a Golden Owl in the category of media. On her way from Vienna back to Toronto, she made a stopover in Warsaw where she told Michał Owczarek what she received the award for.

“Together with a colleague of mine, we have developed an innovative global project, something that’s never been done before. It’s the first-ever podcast about Poland and Poles around the world in English,” Bonikowska said.
