The French Interior Ministry's final figures for the vote showed Macron winning 23.75 percent of the vote, with Marie Le Pen garnering 21.5 percent.

Conservative Francois Fillon was just under 20 percent of the vote, marginally ahead of far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon with 19.5 percent.

Emmanuel Macron stands a much bigger chance in the second round than the far-right Marine Le Pen, however, Andrzej Szeptycki from the Warsaw University points that Macron’s European programme is not very favourable for Poland

“His ideas to strengthen the nucleus of the EU, and this pertains to the strengthening of the Eurozone – are not favourable for Poland,” Szeptycki said.

France will hold the second round of the presidential elections on 7 May.
