The Warsaw Mercantile Exchange (Giełda Kupiecka) was established in 1817. It was one of the first modern stock exchanges in Europe.
The exchange was interrupted by World War I and then World War II. After 1945, Poland's communist authorities did not reactivate the market. It was re-established, as the Warsaw Stock Exchange, on 12 April, 1991.
Mateusz Morawiecki, Poland's Finance Minister said that “without the stock exchange, the Polish economy would not be as successful”.
