The Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice on Wednesday ruled that member states must accept their share of refugees, upholding Brussels’ right to force EU countries to resettle a quota of migrants.

The quota was set under a 2015 decision to help relieve pressure on Italy and Greece amid a migration crisis in Europe.

As Michał Owczarek reports, the European Commission said it may seek fines for Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic unless these countries start complying with the bloc’s refugee relocation decisions “in the coming weeks.”

“This absolutely does not change the stance of the Polish government with respect to migration policy or the stance of the Visegrad Group, I believe,” Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło said.
