Poland's environment minister Jan Szyszko has appeared before the European Court of Justice as the European Commission motioned for a penalty for Warsaw over allegedly ignoring a ban on extensive logging operations.

Szyszko admitted that some logging was still being carried out in the Białowieża forest in the east of the country, but argued that Poland respected EU regulations, insisting that current operations were solely aimed at ensuring public safety.

After the ECJ hearing, Szyszko said that "Poland is a leader in terms of protecting biodiversity."

"I am convinced that the European Court of Justice ... will solve this case in accordance with European law," he added.
