The debate is the first opportunity for Poland's head of state to take the floor in the Council since the country joined.

Poland is returning to the UN Security Council for the first time in 20 years and its priorities for the next two years will be boosting international law and prevention as well as combining matters of security with development.

The Council plays a leading role in global security discussions, seeking both peaceful and military solutions to conflicts.

To find out more about the Council's work as well as its challenges and priorities during Poland's two-year stint, Danuta Isler spoke in New York to Ian Martin, executive director of the Security Council Report, a non-profit organisation created in 2004 to advance the transparency and effectiveness of the UN Security Council.

Martin who had served the UN in several senior capacities over nearly 20 years, joined Security Council Report in April 2015.

Poland sits on the UN Security Council with its five permanent members -- China, France, Russia, the UK and the United States -- as well as Bolivia, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Peru and Sweden.
