Poles have marked the European Day of the Righteous, which commemorates those who took a stand against totalitarian regimes and crimes against humanity.

The 6 March celebrations also honoured those who fought to save the lives and dignity of others.

A ceremony commemorating the Righteous who saved the lives of Jews during WWII was held in Łódź in the Park of the Survivors at the foot of a monument in tribute to Polish Righteous.

Justyna Tomaszewska from the Mark Edelman Center of Dialogue said: "This day commemorates not only the Righteous from WWII, but since Łódź is one of the few places in Poland where a monument to that Polish Righteous stands, we honour those who risked their lives to help Jews during WWII. Featured here are the names of some 6,500 Poles who courageously saved the lives of their neighbours, their friends but very often strangers”.
