Last fall Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto signed a decree to create his nation's first special economic zones in a bid to attract businesses to underdeveloped areas of the country’s southern states and encourage foreign investment there.

Now a group of Mexican officials have come to Poland to further promote the initiative.

Poland is Mexico's 47th most important trading partner globally, while Mexico is one of five priority markets that have been selected for the Polish economy.

Juan Cardona, director general for national and international promotion of Mexico’s SEZs, told Radio Poland that Mexico was one of the last countries to introduce special economic zones.

“We have been thinking about it for a couple of decades,” Cardona said, adding that the Mexican officials came to Poland “because we have observed that Poland has one of the best experiences in the special economic zones in the world.”

The Mexican officials have already visited over 30 countries in the world with their mission. As a result of these visits, the country’s Special Economic Zones project has a commitment of around USD 7 billion, according to Mexico's Ambassador to Poland, Alejandro Negrin.
